Haenchen’s Traveling Block (often referred to as Traveling Blocks or ABC/Baffling Blocks) is a classic parlor and stage magic effect. Originally manufactured by Fred and Vida Haenchen (founded 1931), the rights and toolings were acquired by Viking Mfg. Co. in 1976, where it was produced with Viking’s signature high-end woodworking and metal craftsmanship.
The Basic Effect
Setup: Three distinctly colored or labeled wooden blocks (typically Red, Yellow, and Blue, or labeled A, B, and C) are stacked vertically on a decorated wooden base.
The Magic: A tall, open-bottom decorative metal or wood cover (tube) is placed over the stack of blocks.
The Vanish & Reappearance: When the cover is lifted, the center block (e.g., the red block or "Block B") has completely vanished from the stack. The magician then reveals the missing block reappearing in a separate location, such as inside a top hat, bag, or production box.
